Country Drive

This morning Kaci and I jumped out of bed and headed out of the gates of The Grand Hotel in Fair Hope/Point Clear, Alabama.

I reached overhead and pushed the button to let the top down on my Volkswagen Beetle.  It was a perfect July morning to take in the salt air.  As we drove away from the shore we headed into a beautiful drive through the country.

Country Home

Taking in the sites of perfectly laid cornfields sprinkled with an occasional beautiful coastal home, we headed toward what we now know as County Road 24 and The Biscuit King.  Our stomachs were growling when we happened up on a little redneck sign advertising breakfast with ugly biscuits.  As we rolled on, we quickly passed another sign encouraging us to turn around.  Being prone to the power of suggestion, I quickly turned into the tracks of a field that I think a tractor had made just the day before.

Kaci quickly and affectionately reminded me this was a sketchy way to do a u-turn.  I agreed whole-heartedly as I whipped my little beetle around and we took off down County Road 24 for about seven miles.  Not sure what I was getting us in to or how a place this far off the beaten path could even stay in business with their ugly biscuits unless they were not just ugly, but also uh-mazing!

And that they were.  Buttery, but not greasy, it was just right and we were glad we made the drive.  As we  laid by the pool that afternoon, my thoughts kept floating back to those biscuits and gravy.

I began to google search our morning adventure and learned this out of the way spot had been featured in Gardens and Guns, a southern magazine for anybody who is anybody in the South.  The Biscuit King was truly a pleasant surprise and a great start to our day.  Guess I am not the only one who thought these biscuits were worth the drive.  I must tell you, if you ever have the opportunity to be in South Alabama you simply must try this little breakfast spot called The Biscuit King.
